I don’t write books, but essays which are sometimes later collected into book form. The Japanese call essays zuihitsu, literally, “following the brush.” And it often seems to me that this is the way I write – the words just coming out of my pen, as if automatic. Or at least how I would freely

But his heart
that led them
you must imagine.

However you imagine God
must be correct –
for there’s no not-God.

Whatever Creativity
I have been given
is for you –
to give It on
to others.

I sing
to the trees –
and they dance back
to me.

If the art
is altruistic,
then always
it is healing.

The trees don’t regard
their lichens
as eczema.

Countless stars in the universe,
countless spirits in their World:
and the medium has a telescope.

A bird in the sky,
a dot
on my canvas.
