What is the Opposite of Nuts?

What is the opposite of nuts?
It’s soup! Let’s have no ifs or buts.
In any suitable repast
The soup comes first, the nuts come last.
Or that is what sane folk advise;
You’re nuts if you think otherwise.

Richard Wilbur (1921-2017)

Date of Song’s Composition: October 28, 2003

Commentary: The light-hearted poem comes from Wilbur’s collection of children’s poems Opposites, published in 1973.  According to Wilbur, the poem is based on a  children’s game where one person says a word, and others suggest a possible opposite. For instance, if one person says “earth,” another might respond “sky,” or equally plausibly, “heaven.” For further background, and to hear Wilbur read the poem, see here.
