“What To Call What I Photograph”

Open shutter photograph of river water around wet rock, taken for healing by a medical doctor

Photograph by John Diamond, M.D.

I’ve searched for years for the appropriate word of that which I photograph.

“Subject” makes it inferior, under me.

“Object” too cold, unfeeling.

I see a rock and am drawn to photograph it. Did the desire originate in me or the rock – or simultaneously in both of us? A simultaneous, mutual oneness.

And what about Suzie? I wasn’t drawn to her or her to me. We were drawn, impelled to each other. Not me, not her – us. We were one then, we are one now. Our oneness as an Instance of the Oneness.

So I’m tempted to call whatever I photograph a Suzie.
