“Stagefright and the Mother’s Song”

Photograph by John Diamond, M.D.

So-called stagefright
is audience fear.

And, basically, the audience
is always your mother.
So it is to them as her
that you sing.

If you had felt loved as she sang to you,
then you’d know she’d love to hear you
now sing to her.

Your singing is your lullaby – or not,
as you believe
hers was to you – or not.

To the extent you felt unloved by her
so you will fear the audience.
