In a talk that will be of profound interest to anyone who practices meditation, Dr. Diamond explores the primary teaching of the thirteenth-century Buddhist master Shinran: that if one just once invokes the name of Amida Buddha, the Buddha of light and compassion, with pure faith, one is instantly transported to the Free Land – heaven on earth. Dr. Diamond suggests that this will only happen when there is a surrender of the ego and it is done for an altruistic purpose. At a deeper level he views the mantra not as an invocation but an affirmation: you are not asking Amida for her love, but telling her you know you already have it.
