“Liver Meridian I: Happiness”

The predominant emotions for the liver meridian are happiness and unhappiness.

Let us examine some of the expressions and origins of the word happy. You will be reminded, as I was when I first came across them, of the successful gambler. For example, happiness is defined as luck, or good fortune, or the state of prosperity. The original root meant to succeed. This gave rise to the word in Old Norse, happ, which was chance or good luck. From this we got our English word happy, via the Old English word hap, which in its original sense meant good luck. Johnson defines happiness as “Good luck, good fortune, lucky, successful, fortunate.” Hence the phrase happy-go-lucky. We feel happy when fortune has smiled on us—when the gods smile on us, when those who control our destiny, be it good fortune, the gods, our parents, lady luck, or the government, are benevolent. When these external benefactors smile on us, we feel happy. Conversely, when we feel that those who are in a position to give to us withhold from us instead, then we feel unhappy.
