“Beyond the Music to the Soul”
At some level – superficial, shallow or deep – every work of art still transmits the basic problems of life, for example, the fear of death. For few persons have ever really overcome them, at the deepest level.
Therefore to listen to any music, contemplate any painting, feel any sculpture – and relate to any person – will be to have, to varying degrees, our own identical problem intensified.
Brahms may be better, that is has come closer to solving it, than, say, Beethoven. He will show you more of the solution – but he will also pass on to you his remaining deeper unresolved fear.
You will superficially gain by knowing him – but only superficially.
The answer is to use Brahms – and every person, especially your mother – as a vehicle for the complete resolution of this and every problem. By going deep into them – way beyond the notes – to the soul.
To Know the soul of the other as the mother is to then Know our own. And only this Enlightenment resolves this and every problem of our existence.
