Union with the mother of love, from the Latin root matr-, mother, and Sanskrit yoga, union. The term is coined by Diamond and relates closely to the concept of Matrophilia*, love of the mother. Although Diamond sometimes uses the two synonymously, Matriyoga is generally more active, and has a sense of reaching out with the love, and therefore closer to a concept like Yi* or Cantillation(1)*.
